Cart abandonment rates across e-commerce commonly run above 60-70%. Some of that is unavoidable window-shopping — but a large chunk of it is checkout friction that's entirely within your control. Here are the mistakes we see most often when auditing underperforming stores.
Forcing account creation before purchase
Requiring a new visitor to create a full account before they can complete a purchase is one of the single biggest sources of abandoned carts. A guest checkout option — with an easy path to create an account afterward — removes a major point of friction at the exact moment a customer is ready to buy.
Hiding shipping costs until the last step
Surprise costs revealed late in checkout are consistently cited as the top reason shoppers abandon a cart. Showing estimated shipping earlier, or offering a shipping calculator on the product page itself, prevents that late-stage sticker shock from killing the sale.
A checkout process that takes too many steps
Every additional page or form field is another opportunity for a customer to lose momentum or get distracted. The best-converting checkouts we've built condense the process to as few steps as the platform reasonably allows, with a visible progress indicator so customers know exactly how much is left.
Limited payment options
Different customers have different preferences — some want to pay by card, others prefer digital wallets like Apple Pay or Google Pay for speed. A checkout that only supports one payment method turns away customers who simply don't want to dig out a physical card.
No trust signals at the moment of payment
The checkout page is the single moment customers are most anxious about security. Missing SSL indicators, no visible security badges, or an unprofessional-looking payment form all raise last-second doubt that's easy to prevent with the right design choices.
Not optimized for mobile
A large and growing share of e-commerce purchases happen on a phone. A checkout flow that was designed and tested only on desktop often breaks down badly on mobile — tiny tap targets, form fields that trigger the wrong keyboard, layouts that require constant zooming.
Fixing this doesn't require a full rebuild
Most of these issues can be diagnosed and fixed without touching your product catalog or backend systems — it's a checkout and UX problem, not an inventory problem. Our E-Commerce Solutions covers secure payment integrations and frictionless checkout design for both WooCommerce and Shopify builds.
